12 Best Foundations With SPF of 2024, Tested & Derm-Backed

News

Whether you live somewhere warm and sunny or cold and dreary, you should use sunscreen daily. It’s arguably the most important part of a daily skin care routine. If you’re looking for an extra layer of sun protection, an SPF foundation is a nice addition to any makeup routine. These multipurpose complexion products provide sun protection in a pinch—they come in various coverage offerings, from featherweight tinted moisturizers to heavier full-coverage options. However, SPF foundation should not be your only form of sunscreen (we’ll dig into why in a second).

“Foundations with SPF have varying levels of SPF, ranging from SPF 15 to SPF 50,” says New York City-based, board-certified dermatologist Michele Green, M.D. “The higher the SPF level, the more UV radiation exposure your skin can handle before getting sunburned.”

While there are hundreds of SPF foundations to choose from, we’ve found the best ones for every skin type by testing top-rated foundations over two days in our Manhattan-based lab. We considered each product’s coverage, feel, finish, and transfer resistance before ultimately narrowing down to our top 12 picks. Read on to find out which ones made the cut and why.

Bobbi Brown Skin Long-Wear Weightless Foundation SPF 15

PHOTO: Sephora

Why We Love It: Despite its weightless formula—hence the product name—this SPF foundation offers a 24-hour wear time and buildable coverage. Our tester found that the formula lightweight and hydrating; it features tried-and-true skin care staples like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, both of which are known for their ultra-hydrating properties. She also felt it gave her a smooth finish that fell between a radiant and soft matte. While it didn’t cover all her blemishes, she noted that the foundation is easily buildable. Last but not least, our tester thought the shade match was excellent, and looked incredibly even on her skin.

Who It’s for: While this foundation is suitable for all skin types, it’s especially great for combination skin thanks to its non-comedogenic formula (read: it won’t clog pores), natural matte finish, and non-cakey texture. Our tester with combination skin noted how lightweight and hydrated the foundation felt.

Number of shades: 51 | Cruelty-free: No | Size: 1 oz | SPF: 15

Wasimah, tester with combination skin: “I love the shade match, undertone, and finish. It’s very natural, not cakey or oily. The perfect finish for my skin type.”

Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream

Why We Love It: A good SPF foundation doesn’t have to cost a small fortune. This oh-so-versatile product—which is actually a BB cream with broad-spectrum SPF 30—blurs, hydrates, brightens, smooths, and enhances skin all at once. Our tester noted that the product dried down nicely and that nothing came off on her fingers when she touched it; additionally, it didn’t settle into fine lines or wrinkles. She also loved how it helped smooth out her skin tone without looking cakey or feeling oily.

Who It’s for: This multipurpose SPF-infused BB cream is great for anyone who wants sheer, lightweight coverage with a natural skin-like finish. Additionally, its oil-free formula spiked with glycerin and aloe is suitable for sensitive skin. And since it’s noncomedogenic, it is a great pick for acne-prone skin, as well. The sheer coverage helps even out skin tone and complexion, too.

Number of shades: 5 | Cruelty-free: No | Size: 1 oz | SPF: 30

Jenna, tester with combination skin: “It’s overall a great product, and I think most people would be happy with the coverage it brings, which also includes sun protection.”

Armani Beauty Power Fabric + Full Coverage Liquid Foundation with SPF 25

Why We Love It: The Armani Beauty Power Fabric+ Foundation SPF 25 is a medium- to full-coverage foundation with a unique liquid-to-powder texture. Our tester with combination skin thought the buildable foundation did a great job of evening out her skin tone without looking or feeling cakey. While the formula dried down quickly, she said that didn’t make it less blendable.

Who It’s for: Folks with oily skin will love this one thanks to its matte finish, which helps reduce excess shine and an overall oily or sweaty appearance. It’s also great for anyone looking for a buildable medium- to full-coverage formula that’s surprisingly lightweight. The foundation is transfer-, sweat-, heat-, and water-resistant and specially formulated to last for a full 24 hours (read: no touch-ups required as you go about your day or night).

Number of shades: 26 | Cruelty-free: No | Size: 1 oz | SPF: 25

Samantha, tester with combination skin: “The finish of the foundation was matte and didn’t leave me looking shiny or oily, as I’ve experienced with other makeup products.”

ciele tint & PROTECT SPF 50+ tinted serum foundation

PHOTO: Sephora

Why We Love It: Ciele’s SPF-enriched foundation boasts one of the highest SPF ratings of the ones we tested. Plus, it protects against several types of radiation: UVA, UVB, blue light, and infrared. Its formula is enriched with skin care staples such as anti-inflammatory niacinamide, soothing bisabolol, and moisturizing allantoin. Our tester was especially impressed with how smoothly the product settled across her face, offering a dewy albeit still natural-looking finish. Despite its potent formula, the foundation provides a featherweight serum-like texture—hence its name—that’s easily buildable and blendable.

Who It’s for: This serum foundation is ideal for lightweight, buildable coverage, a dewy finish, and a protective skin care-powered formula enriched with SPF 50. It’s especially great for those looking for an everyday option that evens skin tone with minimal effort. Additionally, it’s noncomedogenic, making it suitable for acne-prone skin.

Anna, tester with oily skin: “I liked the premium look and feel of the ‘glass’ bottle, but more importantly, the product’s quality reflected the bottle’s quality. It had a great texture; once it dried, it did not feel like anything oily or heavy was on my face (my pet peeve is an oily sunscreen). I also loved how it evened out my skin.”

Dior Forever Skin Glow Foundation SPF 15

PHOTO: Sephora

Why We Love It: The Dior Forever Skin Glow Hydrating Foundation offers up to 24 hours of wear time, a smooth, even complexion, and a dewy finish for a subtle glow. While the product is described as a medium- to full-coverage foundation, our tester found it more on the sheer side. The foundation is also unique in that its formula features 86 percent skin care ingredients, including moisturizing vitamin E.

Who It’s for: Since this foundation is heat- and humidity-resistant, it’s a prime pick for the warmer months. Also, as mentioned above, our tester noted the coverage looked very natural—almost as if she barely had anything on. With all this in mind, she especially recommends it for a no-makeup makeup look and feel.

Number of shades: 42 | Cruelty-free: No | Size: 1 oz | SPF: 15

Maggie, tester with combination skin: “The finish is quite dewy and natural. Because it is so lightweight, it doesn’t settle into any fine lines.”

Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation Refillable Compact Set

PHOTO: Jane Iredale

Why We Love It: This compact stands out for its pressed powder formulation. Our tester was impressed with how light it felt once applied and said it offered light, natural-looking coverage that evened out her skin and blemishes. She was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to blend, as well. Bonus: It pulls double duty as a concealer and is water-resistant for up to 40 minutes. Ingredient highlights include titanium and zinc oxides for SPF protection, plus pine bark extract to improve hydration and skin elasticity.

Who It’s for: Those looking for a lightweight multitasking formula that works as a sunscreen, concealer, and foundation all in one will love this one. Its convenient pressed powder formulation is especially ideal for on-the-go application.

Number of shades: 26 | Cruelty-free: Yes | Size: 0.08 oz | SPF: 20

Vanessa, tester with combination skin: “I have been using SPF tinted moisturizers and didn’t ever feel the need to invest in what I assumed was a heavier and unnecessary product, but, after trying this, I’m now a fan and interested in trying it throughout every season.”

L'Oréal Paris Age Perfect Radiant Serum Foundation

PHOTO: L’Oréal

Why We Love It: Wearing foundation on mature skin can often result in it settling into fine lines and looking cakey, but this one doesn’t do any of that. Its nourishing formula is enriched with niacinamide, glycerin, and aloe, which are known for their moisturizing and soothing properties. Despite being so lightweight, our tester with combination skin felt that the foundation offered medium, buildable coverage that evened out her skin tone and covered imperfections. She especially loves the product’s finish, which perfectly balances hydration and radiance.

Who It’s for: This ultra-hydrating formula is especially great for mature skin since the older you become, the dryer your skin gets. Its noncomedogenic, dermatologist-tested formula is also ideal for those with acne-prone and/or sensitive skin. While it is marketed towards those with mature skin, our tester felt it would be an excellent product for folks of all ages.

Number of shades: 30 | Cruelty-free: No | Size: 1 oz | SPF: 50

Nikki, tester with combination skin: “It’s very lightweight and feels great on my skin. There is an adequate amount of hydration such that my skin does not feel oily or dry.”

MAC Cosmetics Studio Fix Fluid Foundation with SPF 15

PHOTO: Amazon

Why We Love It: As you can guess by its name, this pick from Mac has 24 hours of staying power, so there is no need to reapply constantly throughout the day. Our tester with combination skin also thought it did a nice job covering imperfections, resulting in a smoother, more even complexion sans any cakiness. Even better, the foundation is transfer-resistant and comes in a whopping 67 shade options to suit every skin tone.

Who It’s for: This long-wearing SPF foundation offers medium to full coverage that lasts all day (and night). Its formula is buildable and breathable and enriched with beneficial skin care ingredients such as sugar kelp extract to control oil as well as hyaluronic acid to boost hydration.

Number of shades: 67 | Cruelty-free: No | Size: 1 oz | SPF: 15

Nikki, tester with combination skin: “The foundation produces a matte finish on my skin. I did not find this product to settle into my fine lines. The finish is flattering and not chalky like many matte foundations I have tested in the past.”

NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30

PHOTO: Amazon

Why We Love It: Besides offering broad-spectrum SPF 30, this foundation’s creamy, oil-free formula is enriched with vitamin C to help brighten along with vitamin E for extra nourishment. Since this is a tinted moisturizer, it offers lighter coverage than a typical foundation. Our tester, who has soft, dry, albeit non-acne-prone skin, felt that it evened out her skin tone, offering an effortless no-makeup makeup look and feel. She described the tinted moisturizer as ultralightweight and blendable with a hydrating feel and a dewy finish, idea for the summer months.

Who It’s for: Available in 16 shades, this fan-favorite tinted moisturizer from NARS suits all skin types and tones, providing a softer, smoother complexion. However, New York City-based, board-certified dermatologist Diane Madfes, M.D., FAAD, is quick to note that “there is a difference between SPF with foundation and a tinted moisturizer. Foundation sits on the skin’s surface while tinted moisturizer penetrates the superficial layer.” As such, this product is perfect for those looking for more of a sheer coverage option.

Number of shades: 16 | Cruelty-free: No | Size: 1.9 oz | SPF: 30

Chelsea, tester with combination skin: “I liked that it wasn’t too sheer so that it was able to even out my skin tone, but it wasn’t caked on.”

Prada Beauty Reveal Skin-Optimizing Refillable Soft Matte Foundation SPF 17

PHOTO: Sephora

Why We Love It: For a full-coverage look, this SPF foundation from Prada Beauty stands out for its breathable and buildable formula, soft matte finish, transfer resistance, and impressive 24-hour wear time. It’s enriched with noteworthy ingredients such as vitamin E, niacinamide, and a probiotic called Lactobacillus Extract Complex, known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Our tester loved how easily the product blended into the skin despite its somewhat thick consistency, which she felt was key to ensuring full coverage without looking or feeling overly heavy or caked on.

Who It’s for: Anyone looking for a full-coverage foundation with a matte finish and sun protection should splurge on this SPF foundation. It comes in 33 shade options purposefully engineered to suit a wide range of skin tones and types, including sensitive skin.

Number of shades: 33 | Cruelty-free: No | Size: 1 oz | SPF: 17

Marissa, tester with combination skin: “The foundation provides very good coverage. It took a little effort to ensure I blended it in but it did blend in nicely. The foundation provides a good evening out of my skin tone without looking overly heavy.”

Supergoop! Protec(tint) Daily Skin Tint SPF 50

PHOTO: Supergoop!

Why We Love It: Think of the Supergoop! Protec(tint) Daily Skin Tint SPF 50 as one-part skin tint, one-part sunscreen, offering seemingly weightless but buildable coverage coupled with a natural second skin-like finish, resulting in a smooth, even complexion. It’s formulated with UV filters and hyaluronic acid-infused clay, which balances the skin’s moisture and sebum levels. Dr. Green says that the formula contains zinc oxide and octisalate, “both mineral and chemical sunscreens, protecting the skin from UV radiation in two ways.”

Our tester with combination skin notes explicitly that the skin tint is suitable for those with dry or normal skin and anyone looking to achieve a more even-looking skin tone. She also felt it was comparable to a lightweight moisturizer as opposed to a standard foundation, giving the appearance of a healthy glow.

Who It’s for: The ultralightweight complexion product is perfect for those craving sheer coverage with a dewy finish. Per the brand, the product is recommended for normal, combination, dry, oily, and/or sensitive skin. Our tester said the formula isn’t heavy or occlusive but stressed it might suit normal to dry skin best.

Number of shades: 14 | Cruelty-free: Yes | Size: 1.18 oz | SPF: 50

Nikki, tester with combination skin: “It evens out my skin tone and covers minor imperfections for a natural, luminous look.”

Tower 28 SunnyDays SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen

PHOTO: Sephora

Why We Love It: This tinted sunscreen foundation from fan-favorite beauty and skin care brand Tower 28 provides light to medium coverage and a natural finish. Our tester, who has sensitive skin, describes the product as hydrating and nonirritating. The skin-care-spiked formula includes “aloe vera, which soothes the skin after UV exposure, and white sage extract, which has anti-inflammatory properties,” explains Dr. Green. Plus, it’s a mineral-based sunscreen that tends to be easier on sensitive skin types.

Who It’s for: Available in 17 shades, this formula is specially designed for sensitive skin types; it doesn’t contain alcohol, fragrances, essential oils, or other potentially irritating ingredients. Our tester recommends the SPF foundation for lightweight, natural-looking coverage, citing the SPF as a great bonus. Meanwhile, Dr. Green notes that the noncomedogenic formula is “great for acne-prone skin.”

Number of shades: 17 | Cruelty-free: Yes | Size: 1 oz | SPF: 30

Amelia, tester with combination skin: “I like how thin the product is and how natural it looks on my skin. I don’t like it when makeup makes me look like I don’t have any natural redness, or it’s obvious when I’m wearing makeup. This product is so thin, which makes me happy because I don’t feel like I’m clogging my pores.”

What to Keep in Mind

  • SPF Level: “One crucial factor to consider when purchasing a foundation with SPF is the SPF level,” says Dr. Green. “The SPF level should be at least 30 or higher for adequate sun protection. A higher SPF level provides more extensive UV radiation protection, reducing the sunburn risk.” Dr. Madfes echoes these sentiments, saying, “If your foundation is less than SPF 30, a thin layer of sun protection should be applied prior.”
  • Your Skin Type: When shopping for foundations with SPF, it’s key to pick one that blends best with your skin type, explains Dr. Madfes. For example, she recommends those with acne-prone skin choose one that either has a powder base or matte finish. Similarly, says Dr. Green, “Those with acne-prone skin should look for labels that indicate the formula is ‘oil-free’ and ‘noncomedogenic.’” Meanwhile, those with drier skin can choose one with an oil base, says Dr. Madfes.
  • Chemical vs. Mineral Sunscreen: There are two primary types of sunscreen: mineral and chemical. The former, “which include substances like zinc oxide, are an excellent option for people with sensitive skin due to their physical barrier that reflects UV rays.” However, she notes they can “often leave a white cast when applied.” On the other hand, chemical sunscreens, which include ingredients like oxybenzone, absorb UV rays and are often preferred for their quick absorption and lack of white cast.
  • Desired Coverage: According to New York City-based board-certified dermatologist Blair Murphy-Rose, M.D. FAAD, options run the gamut, from “lightweight tinted moisturizers that offer sheer coverage to heavier foundations that provide enhanced coverage.” Fortunately, Dr. Green says, “The level of coverage will not affect the sun protection; instead, the amount of foundation with SPF used will.”

Your Questions, Answered

Does the SPF in foundation offer good protection?

Dr. Madfes says, “an adequate layer of foundation must be applied” for a foundation with SPF to provide good enough sun protection. However, she notes that this can be challenging since most people prefer a thin layer of coverage. Per Dr. Green, “It’s recommended to apply about one teaspoon of sunscreen for the face and neck with every application and reapplication, which is a lot of foundation to put on your face.”

Therefore, she and Dr. Green agree that makeup with SPF does not ultimately provide adequate sun protection. “For the best sun protection,” says Dr. Green, “you should be reapplying sunscreen every 90 minutes.”

When should I apply foundation with SPF?

“Apply the foundation with SPF as your last skin care step after sunscreen and/or primer and before the rest of your makeup application, if any,” says Dr. Murphy-Rose. If you’re not applying regular sunscreen (though you should!) apply the SPF foundation “after prepping skin with moisturizer and primer, if you choose.”

Does foundation with SPF expire?

Like all skin care and cosmetic products, foundations with SPF have expiration dates, and it’s essential to keep those in mind. What’s more, Dr. Green explains, “Over time, the active foundation sunscreen ingredients break down and become less effective in preventing sunburn and damage. More importantly, using expired products can cause skin reactions such as irritant contact dermatitis, leaving your skin red, irritated, and dry.” If you can’t find your SPF foundation’s expiration date listed on the packaging, Dr. Madfes says that “a general rule is to dispose of the product after one year.”
