Kit Connor grew up on screen — from child star to queer teen heartthrob on Netflix’s Heartstopper, the young actor will be showing fans a bit more of himself in season three with intimate scenes, which he said took several hours to film.
Connor plays sweet guy Nick, a bisexual teen discovering his sexuality with his romantic interest Charlie, played by Joe Locke. Since the two actors started the show when they were both still teenagers — Connor is 20 now — the steamier scenes developed slowly, and will move to the next level in season three. In a recent wide-ranging interview with The Sunday Times, Connor opened up about his rising stardom and taking those scenes further.
“We’ve been taking baby steps,” Connor said of the sex scenes. He explained that both he and Locke have had the same intimacy coordinator on set since the beginning, ensuring they are both comfortable.
“Season one, [the intimacy coordinator] would be there making sure that we were comfortable holding hands,” Connor continued. “And now we’re doing the sex scenes. We shot a lot of footage for them. Not much actually ended up in the show.”
Connor also said that production shot “the sex scenes for about seven hours.”
Locke recently told Variety in an interview that he and Connor are so comfortable getting physical with each other after filming so many kissing scenes together: “We were like, ‘Right, come here — let’s do it.’”
“The second half of the season is about sex,” Locke continued. “[It’s] almost like being in Season 1 again with the first-ever kissing scene. Me and Kit are so comfortable with each other, but it’s still a vulnerable thing to do.”
Even after filming such vulnerable scenes, Kit Connor said that at the end of those days, the actors just get together “into someone’s apartment” and “just collapse on the sofa.”
“If someone was finishing a bit earlier, they would cook or we’d get a delivery — it was lovely.”
